The electric power transformer is one of the most important and expensive components of the energy system. Due to fluctuations of the raw materials price, the profit of the manufacturers of these devices depends on the electric transformer construction type, for which the ratio between the mass of the ferromagnetic core and the mass of the conductive material minimizes the production cost, considering the imposed gauge and the variation in the market of the price of those materials, electrical lamination steel and conductive material. Thus, the paper proposes a methodology for analysing the construction form of electric power transformers in order to identify an optimal version. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is applied to determine the set of solutions (assembly versions) by means of a surface defined by the variation of the MFe / Mwire ratio according to the two transformer dimensions, height (Hm) and length (Lm) respectively, where MFe is the mass of the ferromagnetic core and Mwire is the mass of the windings. The application of the proposed methodology is made for an oil-cooled three-phase power transformer, with aluminium windings that has Sn = 630kVA rated power. Paper purpose: Identification of a method for a quick estimation of the principal dimensions of an electrical power transformer with specified rated data for which certain characteristics (weight, costs or the mass ratio of the conducting materials and of the magnetic core) have optimal values.Elements of originality: Through the response surface method, the analytical relationships between the weight of the active materials (conductive materials and magnetic materials) used in the construction of an electric power transformer and its main dimensions were identified.
