Electric motors with flux modulation, Vernier motorAbstract
Recently, the study of electric machines with magnetic flux modulation has become an increasingly intense concern. Compared to the design principle of classic electric machines, these machines have a different number of poles in the stator and rotor. While classic synchronous machines produce torque based on the fundamental magnetic field at the air gap, flux modulation machines use the higher harmonics in the magnetic field curve to generate torque.
One of the most studied flux modulation machines today is the Vernier machine (MV). It has the advantage of producing high torque by reducing the speed of the rotating field in the stator at very low rotor speeds, acting as an electromagnetic speed reducer. Therefore, it can be used as a motor for electric vehicles placed directly in the wheel, or as a wind generator where the speed of the drive propeller is reduced. The MV was originally built as a variable reluctance motor with a simple and robust construction, but with a low power factor. To compensate for this shortcoming, MVs with permanent magnets (PM) in the stator or with hybrids and different topologies were developed. This paper presents a study of the most recently proposed MV design variants.
